Clearing 2023 FAQ's

Clearing is how universities and colleges fill any places they still have on their courses, giving you the chance to find a suitable course.

It’s available to anyone who has made a UCAS Undergraduate application and doesn’t hold any offers. Running from July to mid-September, you’ll be eligible for Clearing if:

  • - you apply after 30 June
  • - you are not holding any offers from universities or colleges you’ve applied to
  • - your place is not confirmed after exam results are published

Clearing starts 5 July 2023. If you apply to university after 30 June 2023, you will be entered into Clearing.

Clearing usually becomes available once results have been released in cases where students haven’t met the entry criteria for their previously chosen courses. Results days in 2023 are:

  • - International Baccalaureate results day: 5 July 2023
  • - BTEC and other vocational courses results day: during July – check with your school/college
  • - Scottish Highers results day: 6 August 2023
  • - A Levels results day: Thursday 15 August 2023

UCAS Clearing runs from 5 July 2023 (the day after International Baccalaureate (IB) results are published) until 20 September 2023. 5 July to 23 October

In the case that you don’t get on to your desired course, prepare a list of alternative courses and/or institutions so you are ready to contact these during the clearing period.

Whatever your expectations regarding your exam results, you should have a contingency plan in place.

The best way is to regularly check UCAS Track on the UCAS website.

You will know that you are in UCAS Clearing if your UCAS Track status says ‘You are in Clearing’ or ‘Clearing has started’.

Top 10 Tips and Guidance for Clearing 2023

It is up to you to find a university that is prepared to accept you. The best way to do this is to check UCAS or the university website, ring them and tell them what you want to do. If they have a vacancy, they will usually take your details and either gives you a decision straightaway, or soon afterwards.

Here are some tips:

Prepare in advance

In the case that you don’t get on to your desired course, prepare a list of alternative courses and/or institutions so you are ready to contact these during the clearing period.

Be positive

It may have got some bad press in the past, but Clearing is now a buyer’s market. Most universities in the top 20 of our league table will have some vacancies in Clearing.

Regularly check UCAS Track

If you become eligible to use Clearing, an ‘Add Clearing choice’ will appear on your Track Choices screen. You can also check directly with your firm and insurance choices.

Start sooner rather than later

Vacancies at higher ranked universities can be filled quickly, so be the early bird that catches the worm! Remember to have your Clearing number to hand.

Contact course providers personally

Universities are less impressed when someone rings on your behalf, and they are unlikely to be able to offer a place unless they are speaking to the candidate directly.

Don’t give up

Clearing can be stressful, but don’t stop trying. If you’re not having much luck on the phone, try sending an email too. Remember, it’s not just you going through this process.

Consider alternative courses

Maximise your choice by considering a joint course with another subject, instead of a single subject course.

Check the official Clearing listings

You’ll find these on UCAS or university websites.

And don’t forget – you will only be able to have one Clearing choice at a time!
