Course Description

What is geography? Geography is about people, places and the environment. By making a study of it we learn about different countries and their problems and so gain a greater insight into our own problems and environment. In Geography we study many exciting topics. Don't take my word for it, read some of the things our pupils have to say. Year 8 geography In Year 8 we study six topics: Topic 1 Mapskills We learn all about where places are and how to read maps. Topic 2: Rocks Through this topic we look at the environmental issue of quarrying. We hold a class debate which is great fun. Topic 3: Weather and Climate Have you ever wondered why it rains Why has Spain a warmer climate than Northern Ireland These are just some of the questions we answer in this topic. We also complete a project on hurricanes. Hurricanes are fascinating things! Topic 4: Transport Through our transport topic we carry out our fieldwork. We conduct a traffic survey collecting, presenting and analysing data. This is a very practical topic you will really enjoy. Topic 5: Ecosystems This is when we look at different regions of the world. We study the tropical rainforests and find out about all the issues involved in them being cut down. Topic 6: The United Kingdom Through this topic we have the opportunity to plan a holiday visiting various places in the UK. This is a fun and interesting project. Through Geography pupils are encouraged to participate in active learning, develop their thinking skills, debate issues, research projects and enjoy the wide knowledge base this subject offers.
