Foundation Degree Working with Special Needs Course Overview This two year Foundation Degree programme is validated by Lancaster University. It has been designed in response to major changes in the government's policies these include: the report by the Strategy Unit 'Improving the Life Chances of Disabled people', the report by the Commission for Social Care Inspection: 'Growing up matters, better transition planning for young people with complex needs' (2007), the Governments review document Aiming High for Disabled Children (2007), and the Children's Plan (2007). All of such identify the need to develop the workforce in order to provide well trained professionals to help deliver the governments vision for disabled peoples' services. The Foundation Degree in Special Needs aims to address these training needs by raising the special needs practitioner's awareness of the importance of providing seamless transitions between child and adulthood through study of those individuals with special needs from birth to old age. What will I study? You will study 16 units to complete the course. These modules will examine the theories and principles relating to professional practice within the field of special needs. You will be given the opportunity through the optional modules to specialise in children, young people or adults with special needs pathways in order to develop your personal interests. Modules can include Special Needs Environment Stages of Development Professional Development Planning (PDP) Safeguarding the Vulnerable Course Requirements A Level 3 qualification is desirable. However, applicants without such qualification may be accepted following an interview. Applicants must demonstrate substantial experience of working in a special needs environment and be able to discuss your reasons for wanting to pursue this qualification. Successful applicants will also need to be working with children, young people or adults with special needs in a relevant setting for a minimum of 12 hours over the academic year.
