Duration 1 year Description of the Course The course is based upon giving the students the opportunity to learn about practical work skills and to work successfully with others while continuing to develop independence skills. Course content The course is based upon giving the students the skills they need to carry out supported work. More varied experience including work experiences and sessions off site will allow the students to practice their skills in a wider context. Students are encouraged to develop life skills which will specifically help them with organising themselves for work. Students will learn through practical tasks, which will include: ? Travel Training ? Time and Money Management ? Communication Skills ? Meal Preparation ? Community Living - independence skills at home, personal safety at home and in the community, investigating community facilities ? Life Skills at Work ? Health & Safety at Work ? Supported Work Experience ? Students are taught in small groups with support from classroom assistant during all classes and at break times. The Course aims to:- ? Provide opportunities for students to continue to develop practical independence skills. ? Provide opportunities to further independence specifically in relation to work situations. ? Provide opportunities for the students to work successfully together Assessment Formal assessment through OCNSER and ESB certificates. Students will have a portfolio of criteria that will be used to continually log and celebrate their successes. This logbook of statements will clearly map out progression and inform practical planning, targeting and teaching. It will also provide evidence of achievement that will assist in making plans for the future. Who is the course for? This course is designed for students with learning difficulties who possess some literacy and numeracy skills from Milestone 5 onwards. In addition, students may need support for their emotional and social development in relation to working in groups and they may have complex health/physical needs. Ideally the course would be accessed after the Promoting Independence course where students will already have had the opportunities to begin to develop the skills which this course builds upon. Entry requirements No formal qualifications What can I do after this course? Students can progress onto the Promoting Community course within the Foundation Skills department. Other information Staffing It is anticipated that each group would have a maximum of 8 students. Students will have a group tutor who will be responsible for the well being of each individual, providing pastoral support where necessary. Students will be taught, in the main, by their tutor in addition to other members of the staff team. Each tutor group will have a group learning support worker to assist students in their learning. Monitoring the Learning Students will have an individual learning plan. This plan provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning, logging and monitoring tasks as the course progresses. In consultation with their tutor, the students will indentify their own aspirations and goals for learning, which will be monitored through the individual plan. Cost Tuition Fee 615 Registration 30.75 Additional costs ?3.00 per week for meal preparation class. Fares for travel: most of these cost can be avoided by acquiring a freedom pass.
