Course Description

This course takes a selection of units from two qualifications. The final Certificate will have the same title as several others of our full time courses. The units gained to achieve the award in this case will be orientated towards maintenance. The Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) Intermediate Certificate in Engineering - consists of 3 mandatory units and a selection of a minimum of 3 optional units. The optional units may vary year on year depending on demand and availability of resources and we cannot guarantee specific units. In some cases we may be able to offer additional units. The mandatory units are: Unit 1 :Engineering Environment Awareness This unit enables the candidate to acquire essential knowledge and understanding of the engineering environment in relation to the requirements of current legislation, personal development and the factors that influence the engineering industry. Unit 2 :Engineering Techniques This unit enables the candidate to become aware of the techniques employed in engineering to communicate, measure and the use of basic equipment. Unit 3 :Engineering Principles This unit enables the candidate to become aware of the types of materials and their properties, fundamental numeracy and craft science used in an engineering environment. The selection of optional units most likely to be delivered on this course includes; Unit 7 :Fabrication and Welding Principles This unit enables the candidate to acquire the general fabrication and welding skills and knowledge essential and common to all optional units within the Intermediate Fabrication and Welding pathway. Unit 8 :Welding Techniques This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge of the main welding processes and enable them to demonstrate welding skills in accordance with appropriate standards. Unit 10 :Sheetmetal Operations This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge and skills to undertake sheet metal working activities. Other units that may be included instead are; Unit 9 :Platework Operations This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge and skills to undertake plate working activities. Unit 11 :Non Fusion Joining Techniques This unit enables the learner to acquire the essential skills and knowledge to perform non fusion joining techniques on a range of materials using a range of processes. Unit 12 :Thermal Cutting Techniques This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential skills and knowledge to demonstrate Oxy Fuel Gas cutting techniques. Unit 16 :Material Properties, Uses and Processes This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge of types of material, their properties, uses and associated processes. Unit 17 :Fitting and Assembly Techniques and Technology This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge to achieve elementary fitting and assembly skills. Unit 18 :Machining Techniques and Technology (Turning Milling) This unit enables the candidate to acquire the essential knowledge to achieve elementary turning and milling skills. Assessment of each unit is via specific practical tasks and multiple choice exams. The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Performing Engineering operations consists of 3 mandatory units and a selection of a minimum of 3 optional units. The optional units may vary year on year depending on demand and availability of resources and we cannot guarantee specific units. In some cases we may be able to offer additional units. The mandatory units are: Unit 1 :Working Safely in an Engineering Environment Unit 2 :Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering Unit 3 :Using and Communicating Technical Information Unit 4 :The selection of optional units includes; Unit 5 :Producing Components Using Hand fitting Techniques Unit 6 :Producing Mechanical Assemblies Unit 22 :Producing Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies Unit 23 :Producing Plate work Components and Assemblies Unit 24 :Cutting and Shapi
