Course Description

Veterinary Care Assistants (City and Guilds) Who is the course for? This course is ideal for people who are working in veterinary practice and who wish to have a recognised qualification. The course modules cover all of the aspects of veterinary nursing required at this level and completion allows progression to NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. Please note: this course is studied at Cannington Centre for Land-based Studies. What will I study on the course? The course covers anatomy and physiology, canine and feline husbandry and management, exotic husbandry and management, first aid, health and hygiene, and basic nursing skills. You will also study reception skills, finance and administration. You will be in college for one day a week and in your veterinary practice the rest of the time. What other skills will I acquire? You will work towards key skills in Communication and Numeracy. These must be completed in order to have the correct entry criteria to enrol onto the RCVS Veterinary Nursing NVQ Level 2. What makes this course special? You will be studying at the Cannington Centre which has an extensive range of relevant veterinary equipment and access to the college's animal collection is available for exotic identification and husbandry. Teaching will be by qualified Veterinary nurses who have current experience. What do our students say? Provides excellent link between theory and practice. An excellent opportunity to meet other students and share good practice. How will I be assessed? Assessment is by end of module tests and an externally set examination. You have to complete a portfolio of case studies from your work in practice. How long is the course? This is a one year course. Will this course lead to a qualification? On successful completion of this course you will be awarded an ABC Certificate in Animal Nursing Assistants. What can I do on completion of this course? You can work as a veterinary care assistant in a veterinary practice. Alternatively you can progress to RCVS Veterinary Nursing if employment within a training practice is found. You could also work within a kennels, cattery or other animal establishment.
