Course Description

Courses are delivered at customer sites on dates to suit the customers needs. The training is conducted on customer equipment With no experience the novice needs to have time to both absorb the theory and then acquire the practical skills for safe handling of the Lift Truck. In order to gain confidence in their ability and new found skills they also need to appreciate the Health and Safety side of this new found working environment on a lift truck. At the course end successful candidates will understand the statutory requirements and the need for safety training, and should be able to operate their machines both safely and efficiently. The course covers machine and control familiarisation, daily checks/refuelling, manoeuvring in open and confined areas, and on slopes, stacking & de-stacking of various loads, loading and unloading of Lorries / Vans / Trailers and much more. The duration of the course should allow sufficient time after initial instruction for the candidates to practice to further develop skill and ensure the correct standards of operation. This course is suitable for: Rough Terrain Lift Trucks: both fixed mast and variable reach telescopic handlers, and many other categories of plant. Course Duration 4 - 5 Days: Actual duration dependant on number of candidates, type of equipment and the discretion of the Instructor with regard to each individuals progress in preparation for the assessment test. (Maximum of 3 candidates per course). Course Content Approx 2/3rds day Classroom based Theory training during the 4 ? 5 days to establish safety knowledge including: Current legislation / statutory requirements (HASWA 1974, PUWER 98, LOLER 98 etc). Raise awareness of site safety & risks associated with truck operations, & the causes of accidents. Develop understanding of the basic construction & main components of the lift truck including its principles of operation, including lifting capacities and de-rating required depending on circumstances / application, relevant safety films. Information on the stability characteristics & factors affecting machine stability. The inspection and basic maintenance tasks appropriate to operators as required by the manufacturers and any relevant legislation. The location, purpose & method of use of all controls & instruments, including any specific load handling attachments which may be used. Manoeuvring exercises loaded & unloaded in forwards & reverse over varying terrain using differing steering modes & in various operating conditions including safe operating practices & precautions on rough terrain, slopes and in confined areas. Identification, assessment & handling of various forms of load including safe operating practices for picking up & depositing from bulk stacks, warehouse racking systems and goods vehicles at various heights including those at or close to the particular trucks maximum height capabilities. Action to be taken in an emergency in particular for example, action to be taken in the event of a tip over. Considerations to be taken with regard to the parking of a lift truck including the prevention of unauthorised use. Theoretical assessment of 5 open and 25 multiple choice questions (can be conducted orally where language barriers or literacy difficulties exist). Practical assessment of operators? knowledge of & ability to carry out a pre-operational inspection. Practical test of basic operating skills based on the various activities undertaken throughout the practical exercises. Course Certification On successful completion of a theory test consisting of both open and multiple choice questions and a practical assessment test, successful candidates will receive a Certificate of Training in Basic Practical Skill and Ability. Course Documentation Training Records and Nationally recognised & registered Certification (Either ITSSAR or NPORS) with Photo ID Card forwarded to Employer.
