Course Description

BedZED (Beddington Zero Energy Development) and Beyond CPD Course Content This one day training event is a comprehensive introduction to sustainable development for professionals in the construction and buildings industry. The course will help your organisation its employees address the issues, consider the solutions and enable you to talk to stakeholders from an informed position. Participants will receive a brief talk on each issue, followed by the opportunity to walk around BedZED and discuss the strategy we implemented first hand, guided by an expert. You will also be introduced to One Planet Living?, a global initiative based on 10 principles of sustainability, developed by BioRegional and WWF International. BioRegional are developing new sustainable communities around the world based upon our lessons learned at BedZED, going beyond BedZED to look at the following ten principles of sustainability: Zero Carbon Zero Waste Sustainable Transport Local ans sustainable materials Local and sustainable food sustainable water Natural habitats and Wild Life Culture and Heritage Equity and fair Trade Health and Happiness The course typically runs from 9.30am until 4.30pm, and includes the following sessions: Introduction (1hr) Introduction to BioRegional, how ecological footprinting helps us understand sustainability, an overview of the strategies employed at BedZED, and an introduction to One Planet Living?, a global initiative based on 10 principles of sustainability, developed by BioRegional and WWF International. Built environment - energy, materials, water and biodiversity (1.5 hours) The morning session will look at issues relating to: embodied energy in construction, including reclaimed / re-used, recycled and local materials; post-occupancy energy use in buildings, including space heating and electricity; renewable energy generation, from single building to community level systems; water demand reduction, flood attenuation and on-site water treatment; providing for biodiversity and climate change adaptation. Lifestyles - transport, food, waste, community (1.5 hours) The afternoon session will look at issues relating to: reducing car mileage with a green transport plan, including car parking and site layout, car clubs, provision for electric and biodiesel vehicles, public transport, cycling and walking; local and sustainable food, including growing food on-site, encouraging the uptake of local, seasonal and organic vegetables, reducing food waste and promoting low meat and dairy diets; waste reduction, re-use and recycling, including potential on-site facilities and community strategies; designing for sustainable communities, from the design of the site to the provision of on-site facilities. Question & answer session with a resident (1 hour) The day will end with a Q&A session, offering participants the opportunity to put their ideas to a BedZED resident and to find out first hand how s/he has responded to the strategy we put in place.
