Sure Start Unit Recognised Early Years Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree course code: 0705p10-1 start dates: September 2010 course length: 2.5 Years location: Worcester College of Technology daytime: TBC first year fee: ?TBC you may also be interested in: Progression to EYPS or Top Up Degree course content Two modules are taught each term, with on-going Work-Based Modules running throughout the 7 terms of the course. Level One: Developing Professional Practice and Study Skills This module is designed to help students make the transition into Level 4 learning. A supportive approach is taken as it is particularly aimed at students who are returning to learning after a long break from academic studies. The module gives students the opportunity to explore and practice study skills relevant to the course, eg. researching information, essay writing, referencing and reflective writing for professional development. Safeguarding Children This module explores the knowledge and professional principles which underpin the current practice in safeguarding children. It also examines the concept of children's rights, empowerment and the child's voice in relation to early years practice. Developing Positive Learners This module focuses on the social and emotional well-being of children and how this impacts on their learning and development. It encourages students to evaluate their practice in terms of developing positive relationships and meeting children's individual needs. Play and Development This module explores the relationship between play and development and the theory underpinning different approaches to play in early years settings. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the role of the adult in relation to child-initiated and adult-led play, and their own practice. Managing People in Early Years Settings In this module students examine the relationship between the individual and the team in early years settings, and the possible effects on children and their families. The different approaches and strategies for managing people will be explored and students will be encouraged to reflect on their practice and the leadership styles they have encountered. Working Collaboratively This module focuses on the key practice of working collaboratively with parents, professionals and agencies to support children's individual needs. Students will evaluate policy and practice and identify effective strategies for supporting children, families and staff. Work-Based Module 1 (Self Evaluation and Study Skills). For this module students will build a portfolio of work-based evidence which relates the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge to their role within the early years setting. The main emphasis will be on reflective writing whereby the student evaluates practice and identifies personal learning. In addition the student will reflect on their professional and personal development during the first year of the course. The delivery and assessment of this Work-Based Module 1 is combined with Work-Based Module 2. Work-Based Module 2 (Professional Practice) For this module students will build a portfolio of work-based evidence which relates the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge to their role within the early years setting. The main emphasis will be on reflective writing whereby the student evaluates practice and identifies personal learning. In addition the student will carry out a longitudinal observation. Level Two: Investigating Quality in Practice This module examines the legislation, policy and practice related to quality provision in early years services. The influence of research on policy and the role of practitioner- led research, including ethical guidelines, will also be explored. Promoting Curiosity and Investigation In this module students will apply their knowledge of how children learn to the provision of activities which promote curiosity, problem solving and investigative skills in line with the EYFS.
