Course outline What is the course about? You will learn how to speak more fluently through the application of a fluency-shaping technique, vocal fold management. You will first increase your awareness of your own pattern of breathing and then be introduced to Four Part Breathing and the Vocal Fold management technique. You will work on developing your breathing and voice co-ordination. Voice production will be explained and vocal fold management will be practised in order to achieve increased fluency. What topics will we cover? Breathing awareness exercise Education regarding the diaphragm and how normal breathing works Education regarding how the voice works A Four Step Breathing Sequence A fluency shaping technique called Vocal Fold Management - this will enable you to introduce more fluency into your speech, in a controlled way. By the end of this course you should be able to: Explain how the voice works Explain the four part breathing sequence Co-ordinate the four-step breathing sequence with vocal fold management to achieve more fluent speech Speak more fluently within the group Speak more fluently outside of the group in a number of situations. What level is the course and do I need any particular skills? This is a course for people who stammer and who have recently undergone a previous course of Block Modification Therapy. You need to attend a pre-course advisory session (free of charge) prior to joining this course. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class? There is a large component of practical work. Visual aids including video and handouts are used. Work will be undertaken both in the whole group and smaller sub-groups using a wide variety of communication activities. You are encouraged to extend therapy into working on your speech outside and to take an increasing level of responsibility for your learning. Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring? There are no other real costs although you are asked to bring a notebook to sessions. We recommend that you read the book Self-Therapy for the stutterer by Malcolm Fraser alongside the course. This can be borrowed from the City Lit library or bought from the British Stammering Association for around ?8. Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol? Yes. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be asked to evaluate your own progress throughout the course. At the start you set yourself goals and your progress in relation to these will be discussed during the course. Feedback from tutors and other students is an important and ongoing part of the course. In addition, your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor who will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form
