Check more dates Course outline What is the course about? This course is for experienced therapists to revise the anatomy and physiology of the lower back, pelvis and hips. You will discuss common problems, learn relevant exercises and shiatsu-based techniques that help to alleviate those problems. What topics will we cover? - Explore the relevant musculature of the lower back, pelvis and hips including origins and insertions - Discuss common disorders of the lower back, pelvis and hips - Practice bodywork techniques that relieve tension in the lower back, pelvis and hips - Practice relevant exercises that relieve tension in the lower back, pelvis and hips. By the end of this course you should be able to: - Identify the muscles of the lower back, pelvis and hips - Describe the origins and insertions of the muscles - Recognise the key ligaments of the lower back, pelvis and hips - Name the actions for the joint and muscle that cause each movement - Name the relevant ligaments and joints - Name the main blood vessels and nerves that supply the lower back, pelvis and hips - Describe some common disorders of the lower back, pelvis and hips - Demonstrate some shiatsu-based bodywork techniques - List and practise some self-help exercises for common conditions of the lower back, pelvis and hips. What level is the course and do I need any particular skills? Suitable for experienced bodywork therapists with a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology who wish to broaden their technique base. The techniques are performed on massage tables on fully clothed clients. No oil is used. PRE-BODYWORK QUESTIONNAIRE The following list is a guide to be used when deciding whether you wish to undertake a course in body work. Our strict guidelines aim to protect the health and safety of students in training and those they practise on during and after the course, whilst providing widest possible access. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake a bodywork course. Please bring GP letters with enrolment form to the Health & Movement advice and guidance session for validation stamp. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in a bodywork classcourse. - Epilepsy - Diabetes - An untreated medical condition - Spinal injuries - A recent operation - Severe skin disorders - Severe mental illness - On medication - Cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure, severe varicose veins, heart problems, thrombosis) - Bone or joint disorders (Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis) - Pregnancy (or post natal) - Endocrine disorders - Knee Problems (for Shiatsu, Thai massage and introductory massage courses only) - Is there anything else we should know about your health before you enrol for a course? If there is, please let the Health & Movement Studies team know. If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks and adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class? Discussion, handouts, worksheets, group and practical pair work, observation, demonstration and feedback. Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol? No. What feedback will I get? You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate.
