Course Description

This unique analytical science programme is offered by Swansea University?s Institute of Mass Spectrometry. Swansea University has long been established as a centre of excellence for mass spectrometry, and now offers this innovative training programme,developed in conjunction with major UK industrial partners. Analytical science is vital to countless UK industries with mass spectrometry (MS) a key technology. When combined with separation techniques, such as liquid chromatography (LC), it is the gold standard for biological, medical and chemical analysis, recommended for validated analytical reference methods by bodies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). World demand for mass spectrometry and chromatography has been growing at an unprecedented rate, with qualified graduates in short supply and thus, highly sought-after. Developed with the needs of industry in mind, this analytical science programme includes essential topics such as method development, data analysis and laboratory management, as well as optional modules allowing students from a range of science backgrounds (chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacy, physics etc.) to specialise in selected industry-relevant applications. Employment Prospects The UK has large pharmaceutical, analytical, fine chemical, environmental, health and forensic science industries. Textile manufacture ? Archaeology Module Synopses Mass spectrometry ? basics and fundamentals. Will enable students to gain a sound knowledgebase of the basic concepts of mass spectrometry including the individual components, linking to modern separation techniques, instrument maintenance, spectral interpretation, and the basis of modern applications such as, compound identification by generating a characteristic mass ?fingerprint? for the chemical structure and compound quantitation. Separation science and sample handling. Covers the basic and advanced concepts of separation science, how it is integrated with several forms of compound detection, gain ?hands-on? problem solving experience and strategic method development for complete bioanalysis according to compound chemical characteristics and method application. Application I - Proteomics. Will enable students to gain a sound knowledgebase of the concepts of mass spectrometry based proteomics including sample preparation and separation (protein extraction from cell and tissue, protein digestion, peptide separation), mass spectrometry analysis (peptide fragmentation and interpretation of CID spectra of peptides), protein identification by database searching, quantitative proteomics, and sample preparation and analysis of post-translational modifications (PTMs). Application II - Pharmaceutical. Enables students to develop an extensive knowledgebase of drug development and the role of mass spectrometry within the pharmaceutical industry. Students will be able to characterize and map the path of a drug from administration, to metabolism and elimination, and critically evaluate drug design.
