Teacher education is vital in increasing the capacites and qualification levels of teachers and trainers, equipping them to inspire and educate people in society and the workforce to prepare for future ecomomic upturn and the challenges and possibilties this will bring. Policy makers are paying more attention to teacher educators as a distinct professional group. Issues related to the initial and continuing professional development of teacher educators is rising on the poltical agenda in Europe and in wider global contexts. Recent reforms in the initial and continuing professional development of teachers have highlighted the need to develop a structured preparatory route to a career in teacher education. Studies conducted to date pointed to significant problems encountered by teachers and academics in the process of becoming a teacher educator and showed how beginning teacher educators not only encounter difficulty in gaining access to this specialsit branch of the profession but also experience high levels of stress and insecurity during their first years of practice. The new Masters Degree is based upon over two years empirical research at the University of Sunderland's Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training (SUNCETT). It is centred upon a well research body of additional, advanced, interdisciplinary, pedagogical knowledge designed alongside a specialist programme of professional development. This innovative Masters Degree will enable existing and intending teacher educators to rise with confidence to the demands and challenges of teacher educator roles and at the same time improve access to this important branch of the profession to new generations of teacher educators. This Masters degree incorporates work based learningplacements in teacher educator teams in primary, secondary or post compulsory education, joint practice development, mentorship and collaborative action research. The key purpose of this Masters degree is to prepare already fully qualified teachers to specialise in becoming professional teacher educators. Teaching and Assessment: Work based learning, placements, and mentoring form the core of the programme, supported by seminars and tutorials, lectures, joint practice development and collaborative action research projects Assessment is based on written assessments plus assessment of the Practical Dissertation and observation and assessment of teaching practice. Career Opportunities: Demographic trends in the existing teacher educator workforce combined with current reforms in the initial and continuing professional development of teachers will create a need for well trained workforce of professional teacher educators who have advanced levels in interdisciplinary pedagogical knowledge and expertise which they can relate to the initial and continuing professional development of teachers. Teachers can expect to teach programmes of initial and continuing professional development for teachers in the contexts of sector in which they intend tocurrently practice.
