FURTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS If you are applying for Spanish you should have at least some elementary French. Applicants applying for a PGCE in a modern language subject should have spent a year abroad as part of their degree. Foreign nationals applying for a modern languages PGCE should normally have spent six months living in the UK and had employment as a foreign language assistant in a state school in England. GCSE or O level passes (Grades A?C) in English language and mathematics or equivalent are required before commencement of the PGCE course. You must have spent some working days in a UK secondary classroom prior to application. This will inform your application and any subsequent performance in the selection process. AIMS The secondary PGCE programme prepares you to teach throughout the 11?18 age range in English, geography, history, mathematics, modern languages (French, German and Spanish), and religious education or sciences (biology, chemistry, physics). We are currently offering a fully-funded extension course in German for modern language candidates who have very elementary or no prior knowledge of this language. The following PGCE programmes are eligible: French - R1X1 French with German - RX11. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION During this intensive PGCE programme, two thirds of your time is based in schools. Training focuses on the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of newly qualified teachers. Subject work undertaken in partnership schools is underpinned and extended by a linked programme of curriculum studies in the University. A process of reflective enquiry underpins the development of teaching skills, as well as forming the basis for the written work submitted. In order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) you must demonstrate compliance with all the specified standards, including successful completion of the Training and Development Agency for Schools? (TDA) tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT. You undertake 60 credits of Master?s-level modules throughout your training year. If you successfully pass all components, you graduate with the PGCE at Master?s level and are recommended for QTS. Students who pass the PGCE with QTS have the option to continue their studies on a part-time basis on the MEd Practitioner Enquiry. Students choosing this option benefit from fast-track entry, which enables them to complete the MEd Practitioner Enquiry in two years. Typically the first selection days take place in October for courses beginning in the following September. Some heavily oversubscribed subjects such as history and geography may be full by January. Applications must be submitted online through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) website, http:www.gttr.ac.uk where full details on entrance requirements for individual courses are also available. Please note that under TDA regulations, the University is unable to offer places on its PGCE programmes without a selection process that includes a personal interview. The selection day consists of a presentation by each applicant, a group task, a written task and an individual interview.
