Course Description

Summary This course is a new, highly innovative, vocational course designed to respond to the professional development needs of all managers across the health and social care sectors, including those holding supervisory posts, or having junior or middle management responsibilities. The course addresses management needs within the context of the objectives of the NHS Plan and the modernising agenda. In particular, the course has been designed from the outset as a method of promoting multidisciplinary working as an integral part of modern management practice within these sectors. The course provides managers and aspiring managers, across a variety of disciplines in the health and social care sectors with the opportunity to develop their personal effectiveness in the workplace whilst, at the same time, working towards a formal management qualification. The course provides a range of managers, and aspiring managers, across a variety of disciplines in the health and social care sectors, with the opportunity to develop their personal effectiveness in the workplace whilst, at the same time, working towards a formal management qualification. Additionally, for those students who choose to take and pass an extra paper set by the Chartered Management Institute, they will obtain a further qualification: the Executive Diploma in Management. Course Content: Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert): - Health and Social Policy Environment - Managing Resources - Self Development Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip): - Health and Social Policy Environment - Managing Resources - Self Development - Relationship Management - Managing Quality Entry criteria Applicants will need a first degree or a professional qualification or equivalent, or a HND/C or Foundation Degree with work experience. Applicants with no formal qualifications but with significant relevant work experience, may be considered for entry if they are able to demonstrate that they can meet the criteria. International Entry Criteria: IELTS 6.5 overall and a (UKBA required) minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) During the course Notable aspects This exciting and innovative new course has been developed specifically to develop managers who will be able to deliver the government’s modernising agenda for public services. It aims to bring together for managers and aspiring managers across the public sector, an opportunity to gain a postgraduate management qualification, which has been especially designed to anticipate the emerging issues in the sector. There is a strong emphasis on self-development through the whole course and students will emerge equipped with the broad range of management and intellectual skills that will enable them to enhance their career prospects. The course has been designed with a strong inter-disciplinary thread in order to mirror the real issues that managers have to deal with. On course completion Exit skills On completion of the course, students will be able to: - analyse critically a range of complex issues in the healthcare sector - propose, implement and monitor appropriate courses of action to resolve current and emerging issues - examine critically their own management style and ability - develop further a wide range of high-level, management skills - take a lead in project management across their own organisation. Career progression However with the additional contextualisation of the public sector, this will specifically prepare graduates to apply for more senior management roles across the public sector. This will be in a variety of management settings including Operations, Estates, Risk Management, Administrative, Finance, IT and other professional areas. Successful students will be equipped to operate more flexibly in their current role. The course will also prepare individuals to apply for advanced standing on to Masters courses.
