Our PGCE course is designed to develop an understanding of the pedagogy of chemistry teaching along with practical experience in schools. Understanding and knowing how to enthuse and engage pupils within the secondary age range in chemistry is essential. This course begins to prepare you to become an enthusiastic teacher in the classroom. All our secondary PGCE courses meet the requirements for the professional standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Chemistry Chemistry is an exciting subject to teach and there are many opportunities for well qualified chemistry teachers. It is a National Curriculum core subject and is taught throughout schools. The subject needs exciting teachers to help prepare future adults to take a full and informed part in society. The course is a partnership between the University and the placement schools where you will explore what it means to teach chemistry and develop ways in which to teach it. You will examine the best practice of chemistry teaching and use a range of teaching strategies to challenge and inform students. Subject sessions provide you with an understanding of subject pedagogy in physics and generic science sessions offer you the opportunity to explore a wide range of issues such as 'How Science Works', assessment of science and Literacy in Science as well as the more practical considerations whilst teaching this subject. We also help you prepare for teaching all the sciences at Key Stage 3. You may also study aspects of your subject specialism at post-16. We have a fully equipped science laboratory at the University to help develop your practice.
