Course Description

Hospitality organisations increasingly operate and compete in a global environment. The aim of the course is to enable you to operate effectively at strategic level and help you advance your career in the international hospitality industry or within academia in this discipline. The course is designed to allow you to assimilate a range of relevant theory and research that can be clearly applied within your own workplace. This course is focused on applied learning and the vocational nature related to the hospitality industry. You will learn about contemporary developments in the industry and how to apply theory and principles when seeking solutions to complex problems. You will also gain a sound understanding of business disciplines, such as marketing, human resource management and operations management on an international level, and further develop your management skills. Students without hospitality management qualifications or experience are advised to opt for the sandwich route and undertake a work placement for up to 48 weeks. Modules Core modules include: Critical Thinking, Culture & Learning This module develops critical thinking, self awareness, self management and self recognition of your individual personal, academic and professional skills. Operations & Management This module explores the functions of management, operations, quality and finance and their contribution to organisational success and commercial viability in the hospitality business. Contemporary Issues in Hospitality This module provides you with an understanding of the major influences affecting the international hospitality business environment and enables you to assess a range of strategic issues affecting the management of international hospitality corporations. International Marketing Communication The aim of this module is to explore and understand the communication process and apply marketing communications in an international and industrial context. International Strategic Human Resource Management This module introduces you to the concept of human resource management in international tourism and hospitality. You will be encouraged to be critical and questioning of human resource management theories and their relevance in international tourism and hospitality. Strategic Management This module aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the concepts and techniques of strategic management and develop your ability to apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt within the sector. Research Methods This module will involve an assessment of appropriateness of alternate approaches to conducting research in the sector to provide you with an understanding of the major influences affecting the design and execution of a robust investigation. Postgraduate Independent Project The project is designed to develop your theoretical understanding of a selected topic and SKILLS through a sustained piece of independent intellectual work. Assessments will embrace several approaches which will inform you and allow for development of professional skills and academic knowledge. Individual and small group assignments will be undertaken and performance evaluated through oral presentations, poster presentations, reports, essays and a Postgraduate Independent Project, where an industry based project is undertaken. TeachingDelivery Most classes will be scheduled between 9am-6pm, however, evening, weekend or block teaching can also be arranged for bespoke groups.
