Wood Occupations NVQ Level 2 (Site or Bench) Course Length: 2 Years Site: Broadwater Campus Attendance: Part Time Course Code: DF2WO1 Day : Time : Start 09:00-17:30 w/c 07-Sep-2009 ABC 499.00 449.00 199.00 (Fee per year) A-Full fee, B-Discounted fee for full payment at time of enrolment, C-Concessionary fee for people in receipt of specified benefits The Course This timber trades course has been designed to meet the criteria and requirements of the CITB and City and Guilds schemes for NVQ Carpentry and Joinery, and will enhance the candidate's career prospects in the industry. The target duration of the course is two years, attending for one day each week. Candidates who possess the appropriate Intermediate Construction Award will aim to complete in one year. The NVQ consists of three elements, all of which are included in the course. The first element to be assessed is Underpinning Knowledge, which will be delivered on the college site. The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge which underpins the three mandatory units [Conform to workplace safety; Conform to efficient work practices; and Move and handle resources] and the Optional Units which will be offered dependant on Site or Bench Joinery pathway eg Set up and use circular saws; Install second fix components The second element is the Portfolio of Evidence from workplace activity, which is assessed in the workplace by a college assessor, and which demonstrates a candidates practical competency in the workplace. The third essential element is an external Health and Safety unit which is assessed on-line. . . Course Content Underpinning knowledge topics studied include: Drawing and Calculations Maintenance of hand tools Materials Adhesives Abrasives Doors Linings Frames Portable power tools Windows Stairs Arch Centres Joinery fitments Falsework and panelling Repairs and maintenance Finishings Woodworking machines Setting out Foremanship Management studies Personal Protection Equipment Health and Safety In order to achieve the NVQ qualification all students will have to prepare and present a portfolio of evidence, based on competent practice in the workplace. Collection of evidence from the workplace is a requirement for the assessment of the NVQ units. The College may be able to assist students in finding suitable on site experience. Both theoretical and practical aspects of these subjects are studied and students are encouraged to make full use of the colleges range of learning facilities and workshops. Modes of tuition include practical work and assessments with student based learning packages in the second year. All students on NVQ courses undertake an extensive amount of 'hands-on' workshop training and are required to achieve a range of practical competencies which have been designed to develop the personal skills that are necessary for a career in the construction industry. The department has close contacts with local industry and relevant advice is sought and used in the development of courses so that the subjects studied relate to the vocational requirements of industry. Assessment/Exams Assessment is based on assignments and practical competence testing and related questioning. A proportion of assessment is carried out in the workplace as required by NVQ, and the Health and Safety test is an external on-line assessment. Progression/Career Path Higher Levels: NVQ, BTEC. Membership of the IOC (Institute of Carpenters) is offered to suitable persons, after successfully taking the Institutes theory and practical examinations. Entry Requirements Candidates should be working in the industry.
