Course Description

Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Diploma The 18-unit BTEC National Diploma provides a programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the vocational area and also offers different emphasis through the choice of specialist units. The range of subjects includes specialist technology for the motor vehicle industry, to science and maths for technicians. A BTEC National Diploma qualification is directly equivalent to three A-levels and offers a good opportunity for progression to Higher Education (HE) and employment. Course Content: Under the support and guidance from a team of enthusiastic and dedicated specialist staff, including practitioners who maintain strong links with industry, students will study and work in the surroundings of the Colleges new purpose-built engineering centre in Tunbridge Wells. Students are provided with excellent workshop facilities and industry-standard equipment, enabling them to learn in a realistic workplace environment. The course is made up of 18 units, consisting of six core units which all students must take, and 12 further specialist units of your own choice. Subjects studied include: Core units: These mandatory units are designed to provide you with a sound foundation of knowledge. Essential working practices and customer care Vehicle systems Vehicle electronics Fault diagnoses and rectification Project Vehicle repair and technology Vehicle science and mathematics Specialist units These units enable you to study particular areas in more depth and, if you wish, focus your study on your main areas of interest. Students select 12 from a choice that includes: Engine technology (compulsory unit) Vehicle electrical systems Electronic petrol injection Electronic ignition systems Engine management systems Diesel fuel injection systems Light vehicle transmission systems Vehicle electronic ancillary and information systems Light vehicle steering, braking and suspension Mathematics for technicians Science for technicians Introduction to e-commerce Vocational Relevance: Students of this course may join professional motor industry Institutes (as student members) and gain corporate membership through successful completion of higher level courses and/or further industry experience. Awarding body: Edexcel. Attendance Requirements: Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available. Entry Requirements: Applicants should hold one of the following: Four GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, Science and an English subject BTEC First Diploma at merit or above in a relevant subject An equivalent Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject In addition you should be able to demonstrate an ability to progress to Higher Education . Entry Process: All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts. Assessment: Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Two core units are externally set and marked by EDEXCEL through an Integrated Vocational Assignment. Other units will be internally assessed using a range of methods such as case studies, assignments including work-based assessments, performance observation and time-constrained assessments. There will be an emphasis on practical application of the assessment criteria within work placements. The overall grade for the qualification (Distinction, Merit or Pass) is based on performance across all units. Career Options: Employment within the specialist vocational area or progression to degree level such as the BEng Automotive Engineering with Management programme at West Kent College.
