Painting and Decorating - NVQ Level 2 (Sept '09) This course information relates to courses starting in September 2009. This NVQ Level 2 award is the minimum qualification you will need to gain work as a decorator on site. This course is designed to get you qualified to NVQ Level 2 standards and it builds on the experience and knowledge you have gained on site. The work you carry out each day at work will be used to assess you against the national standards for this award. By the end of the course you will have gained the skills and confidence to conform to general workplace safety, move and handle resources, erect and dismantle working platforms, prepare surfaces for painting and decorating and apply paint systems by brush and roller. NVQ L2 is the industry recognised qualification that is valued by employers. The Health and Safety test that you will sit as part of this qualification is required to get you the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card that employers now require all construction workers to have on site. Course content: On this course you will: CONFORM TO GENERAL WORKPLACE SAFETY CONFORM TO EFFICIENT WORK PRACTICES MOVE AND HANDLE RESOURCES ERECT & DISMANTLE ACCESS WORKING PLATFORMS PREPARE SURFACES FOR PAINTING/DECORATING APPLY PAINT SYSTEMS BY BRUSH AND ROLLER Facilities for students: Students will be based at our City College East campus where we have extensive and excellent facilities for practical and theory work. These include: full-size, all-weather and grass, football pitches, indoor sportshall, gym and dance studio. For talented sportspeople we have a number of College teams that compete against other local and national colleges. Tutors: The Decorative Occupations department is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic tutors who have many years experience on site as tradesmen as well as teaching experience. This will enable students to receive excellent training that will help them in their search for employment. All staff are also experienced A1 vocational NVQ assessors. Assessment: This qualification is assessed by you generating work based evidence, which your assessor will judge in college. A site based visit may also be arranged. There are mandatory Knowledge and understanding questions to be completed. A pass in the CAA Health & Safety test is also a requirement of this award. Awarding Body: CAA Entry Requirements: Candidates will find it essential to have a sound knowledge of mathematics and ability in drawing skills and written communication. Organisational skills will become essential, candidates must show a real commitment to the subject area. You will need 3 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent including Maths and English. Interview for entry: Interview required Pre-entry preparation: Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help, and students may find it useful to do some background reading using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry. Basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset for the research of much of the underpinning knowledge. Watching construction based programmes and discussion groups would also help in preparing the student with terminology and phrases used in the industry. Progression and links: Students may progress to the Level 3 NVQ in Decorative Occupations. Alternatively, an NVQ Level 2 Decorative Occupations will allow you to gain work as a qualified Decorator in the construction industry. Work experience opportunities: It is a requirement of this qualification that you are employed in the construction industry
