NVQ2 Amenity Horticulture Level: 2 Location: BH Years: 1 Course Summary National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-related, competence-based qualifications. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively and show that a candidate is competent in the area of work the NVQ represents. Level 2 is craft or technician level and candidates will be assessed on their practical skills and necessary theoretical knowledge. The candidate is expected to be of craft standard working under limited supervision. Derby College offers options in Sports Turf, Landscaping or Nursery within the Level 2 Amenity Horticulture award. How will I be assessed? NVQs are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment is normally through on-the-job observation and questioning. Candidates produce evidence to prove they have the competence to meet the NVQ standards. Assessors 'sign-off' units when the candidates are ready and the assessor tests candidate's underpinning knowledge, understanding and work-based performance to make sure they can demonstrate competence in the workplace. How much time will I spend on the course? Attendance is for 6 hours a day, one day a week for 27 weeks for both the first and second years of the course. How is the course delivered? Students receive training both in the workplace and during their attendance at the College. In order to complete the award, students will complete a portfolio of evidence comprising observations (by qualified assessors) of their performance, testimony from their employer in relation to their ability to competently perform workplace tasks, written and/or photographic evidence of completed tasks may also be used to demonstrate a trainees ability. During their attendance at College, trainees will be taught much of the theoretical knowledge which underpins the qualification. This is usually assessed by the completion of question booklets or via a series of oral discussions with a qualified assessor. Who is this course suitable for? This day-release programme of study is suitable for learners employed in a range of horticultural undertakings e.g. Landscape and Grounds Maintenance; Landscape Construction; Sport Turf Maintenance and Nursery Practice. What are mandatory modules or units? There are two mandatory units: Unit 29: Monitor and maintain health and safety and Unit 31: Develop personal performance and maintain working relationships. What materials do I have to provide? Writing materials, files, paper and notepad. Personal Protective Equipment including safety boots and overalls must be worn when undertaking practical activities at College. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? Specialist equipment may be required in the workplace depending upon the option being undertaken. What can I do after this course? Level 3 programmes including: Part Time - CandG NVQ 3 Amenity Horticulture and Full Time - BTEC National Diploma in Horticulture. What careers would this course be useful for? This day-release programme of study is suitable for learners wishing to develop their career within a range of horticultural businesses e.g. Landscape and Grounds Maintenance, Landscape Construction, Sports Turf Maintenance, Nursery Practice.
