National Certificate in Animal Care (Part Time) AC075 Qualification BTEC National Certificate in Animal Care Qualification Level Level : 2 What do these levels mean? Run by : Animal Care Department. Tutor : Frank Lea Awarding Body Edexcel BTEC Is it right for me? A National Certificate is a practical, work'related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. At the end of the course you can go into employment or further education. The part time National Certificate is equally suitable for school leavers or for adults looking for a change in career. What qualifications will I need? At least one of the following: BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject. NVQ 1 or land based operations. An acceptable standard of numeracy and literacy. GCSEs grade D to F What will I be learning about? The course is made up of 11 units ' four compulsory core units and seven chosen optional units. The course enables you to study the topics relating to the care of animals. Each unit will be covered in 9 weeks with one unit at a time being delivered and assessed before moving onto the next. Three weeks' work experience will also need to be completed over two and a half years. 4 core units: Animal health and wellbeing Feeding and watering animals Work related experience in the land based sector Safe working with and around animals 7 chosen optional units: Introduction to animal science Animal housing Animal behaviour and handling Kennel and cattery husbandry Introduction to dog grooming Livestock care Exotic pet care To be awarded a National Certificate, candidates must successfully attend and complete the assessment for all 11 units plus pass a written test covering the four core units. The test date will be confirmed on completion of the four core units. What is involved? The 11 units will be delivered over 9 week blocks, as a 3 hour session on a Thursday evening. The course will run over 2 and a half years. Three weeks's work experience must also be completed. You may join the course on specific enrolment evenings which are held each year in September and January. Dates are 03.09.09, 20.01.10, 02.09.10 Where will it take me? Employment within the sector or allied industries. Holding positions in practical animal care. For example: pet store assistant, kennel and cattery worker, wildlife rehabilitation / animal sanctuary carer, zoo keeper, theme park animal technician. What materials are required? Writing materials, protective overalls, steel toe'capped boots (when there is a practical element). What is next? BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management. BTEC National Awards in Animal Management. Dog Grooming. K9 Psychology. How will I be assessed? There will be a final written exam for the 4 core units and assignments will be set to assess practical and theory content for 10 of the 11 units. How much will it cost? Total of ?845 for 11 units over 2.5 years Money Matters Notes Students may qualify for fee remission (ie no fee is payable). Please see prospectus for details on fee remission. Work experience must be found at an animal care establishment and completed at a suitable time/date.
