Awarding Body EDEXCEL Course Content This is a short 45 hour introduction to counselling skills and to counselling. Counselling skills are communication and listening skills useful in any situation where communication is necessary and perhaps difficult. The course focuses on practical skills acquisition, with some theory and personal development. It is available at many college campuses, both daytime and evening. The course begins at different times of the year to facilitate different students. It acts as an access to the remainder of the counselling training programme and is recommended to those who want to progress to counselling training. It is a taster course to determine if counselling training is appropriate and desirable. Course Features A good general introduction to counselling and counselling skills. Flexible delivery. Offered at many campuses, daytime and evening and beginning at different times of the year. A practical course with an emphasis on practising and learning skills. Tutors are both experienced trainers and counsellors. A good starting point for those considering progressing to the higher counselling courses. Stands in its right as a useful course. The very transferable skills of counselling help in communication especially with vulnerable people in a range of settings. Valued by many employers. Students report learning much about themselves on this course as well as finding the skills useful. Career Prospects and Progression Counselling skills qualifications are valued by employers in the caring professions and voluntary organisations. Many students complete this course to acquire the skills for other professions, while some will also want to progress to the Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills and our diploma. Others will progress to degrees, social work training and social care courses and use this course in part to support their application to those courses. Modules There are three units Initial Counselling Skills Introducing Counselling Theory and Practice Personal Development Method of Assessment Continual Assessment - No exam. The units are assessed by tutor observation, short theory questions and keeping a journal. Course Length 15 weeks (3 hours a week) Usually there are 6 courses during the year. They start in October or February. Students can study in the evening or the daytime in various campuses of the college. Time of Delivery Day and Evening Campus Ammanford Campus Bilingual Provision Students can submit assignments in Welsh Entry Requirements An interest in counselling. Students who are considered very vulnerable will be asked to defer entry. Full-time or Part-time Part Time
