Course Description

The Royal Horticultural Society Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture course is intended primarily for mature learners who want to go on to obtain a professional qualification in Horticulture, having first completed the RHS Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. We have decided to offer our learners the opportunity to take a module at a time, at their own pace, taking the examination and passing it before going on to study another module. The whole qualification (a Diploma) consists of 4 modules: Module F (compulsory) Horticultural environment and ecology Resource management in the horticultural enterprise Module G (compulsory) Genetics, plant breeding and systematic botany Plant physiology II Module H (compulsory) Practical horticulture II Module I Planning, layout and construction of ornamental gardens Restoring established ornamental gardens Or Module J (we do not offer module J at Diploma) Establishment and maintenance of decorative ornamental turf Plant selection, establishment and maintenance Hardy ornamental Nursery stock In this module you will look at the: structure and function of genetic material #gamete production, pollination and fertilisation #mono-hybrid and di-hybrid inheritance in plants #current developments in plant genetics #systematic botany physiology of growth, development and flowering #phytochrome #photoperiodism #effects of day length control and temperature on flower bud initiation and development #dormancy in seeds and plants #dormancy breaking in seeds and plants #plant association and competition #respiration and post harvest physiology #post harvest storage, transportation, retailing and shelf life #endogenous and synthetic growth regulators and their effect on plants #effects of plant association and competition on marketable quality and yield
