This is ideal for the beginner 'DIYer' looking to learn the skills and techniques to improve and maintain fixtures and fittings around the home. The course introduces techniques such as hanging internal and external doors, putting up curtain rails, fitting blinds, fixing shelves and battens, ironmongery and rainwater goods, pipes and fittings. Interview Skills Assessment This course requires a short interview with the course tutor and satisfactory completion of a diagnostic test prior to enrolment. What will I need? There are no formal entry requirements. However, you will need to attend a short interview with the course tutor before starting the course. What is covered? The course consists of two units: ? Fix construction components ? Set out for construction components Fix construction components, topics covered include: ? Identify and select materials, components and equipment ? Fix components using hand tools - including at least 3 of blinds, curtain railtrack, shelves, battens, ironmongery (including hanging internal and external doors, door furniture - letterbox, handles, locks, etc.), brackets, rainwater goods, pipes and fittings. ? Check spirit level for accuracy ? Store materials and components ? Clean up, remove and dispose of debris from the work area ? Know the actions to take in the event of an emergency Set out for construction components, including techniques such as: ? Setting out by builders square ? Setting out by 3:4:5 method ? Levelling by a spirit level and straight edge ? Measuring tapes ? Reasons for checking diagonals ? Identification of datum points (being able to transfer levels accurately) ? Reasons for checking dimensions on drawings ? Plumb lines with a plumb bob and line How is the course assessed? This practical course is assessed through a variety of methods including completion of weekly practical tasks, course work, oral questioning, along with practical and written tests. What can this course lead to? The course is designed as an introduction to home DIY, and will teach you all of the above topics to enable you to complete home projects such as boxing in wastepipes in your bathroom, replacing skirting boards and architrave, hanging doors (internal and external), replacing locks and letterplates, replacing guttering and pipework. The techniques covered in the course can also be used for other practical projects around the home such as wallpapering and decorating, tiling and building projects in the garden. Are there any additional costs? You will need to supply your own safety footwear. Sensible, practical clothing will also need to be worn - to be discussed with the tutor.
