CACHE L3 CERT IN SUPPORTING TEACHING & LEARNING IN SCHOOLS Code: 85581A COURSE DURATION: 32 Week(s) COURSE DATES: 17 September 2009 to 05 July 2010 MODE OF ATTENDANCE: PT DAY COURSE RUNS: THU TIME: 9:15 AM to 12:15 PM This part-time course is designed for individuals who are, or are wishing to return to work, under the direction of a teacher, in supporting the learning needs of school students from age 5-16. The course will provide underpinning knowledge and understanding at both level 2 and level 3, and, in addition, after level 3 will be a gateway to further training in Higher Education at DegreeFoundation Degree level. Entry Requirements It is essential all candidates have appropriate qualities for working with children. Hence two references, a police check (Enhanced Disclosure), relevant working experience andor a level two qualification are required. Course Content As a teaching assistant, you become a role model for the children that you are supporting, which means that you will need a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy. The course will comprise 2 units of study, under the direction of Morag Warwick, an experienced teacher and trainer, at Carlisle College. The first unit is 'The Role of the Teaching Assistant in the School' and covers the following: School structure and job role Relationships and interactions Encouraging positive behaviour The planning process The learning process Supporting and scaffolding the learning process Record keeping Policies and procedures Health and safety As part of your course, you will be required to study towards functional skills in Maths, English and IT at an appropriate level The second unit is Teaching and Learning' and covers the following: Supporting learning Supporting the literacy curriculum Supporting the numeracy curriculum Supporting information, communication and technology Working with others Working with parents and carers A portfolio of evidence (placement) Method of study In order to gain a holistic view of the working day within a school, applicants will be required to carry out either a full - day or two half-day placements in the primary or secondary sectors. You will also carry out 120 guided learning hours' whole group teaching in college. In addition, a portfolio of evidence relating to practical classroom skills will also be produced. You also need to appreciate that entering for a level 3 course of study means that you are taking on a large commitment of time and effort. You may need to forward plan to incorporate some home study in your home and family life. Progression routes Employment under direction of a teacher To study at HEDegree Level.
