Course code: B0707A Course category: Part-time End Qualification: NVQ Level 1 Starting and ending month: September to June Starting year: 2009 Days of the week: Tuesday, Wednesday Course duration: 1 year Time of day: p.m. Formal assessment: No formal assessment Course location: Pelham Campus Course aims: This is a vocational course that will prepare you for a career in the exciting industry of Hairdressing, as well as developing important skills such as communication skills and teamwork. A VTCT NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing is an industry recognised qualification. This course is ideally suited if you are aged 19 years or over and wish to embark on a career in Hairdressing. The City College Hair department benefits from having its own, professional salon that is open to the public and staffed by students. You will gain valuable experience of working professionally, which will stand you in excellent stead when you apply for jobs. At the end of this qualification you will have gained skills, knowledge and experience in shampoo and hair conditioning, health and safety, an understanding of reception duties, maintaining your work area and presenting yourself and the salon to a client. Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing, from which point you will be able to apply confidently to hairdressing or stylist positions in professional salons. Course content: On the NVQ Level 1 you will learn to: Shampoo and condition hair Assist with colouring services Health and safety Assist with reception duties Develop effective working relationships Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas Facilities for students: Students will be based at Pelham Tower Campus where we have excellent facilities for practical and theory work. These include: Two well equipped and recently modernised Hair Salons and Reception facilities. Tutors: The Hair Department is managed by Rachel Turner, an experienced Hairstylist and former salon owner. The Hair department is staffed by experienced, creative and enthusiastic tutors who have excellent links with the Hairdressing industry and local employers in the area. Assessment: You will be assessed by: Practical assessments Portfolio Assignments Written papers Oral questioning. The course is approximately three quarters practical, and one quarter theory Awarding Body: VTCT Entry Requirements: There are no academic qualifications required for this course however, candidates are required to have good communication skills, standard of education and professional personal presentation. Interview for entry: Interview required Pre-entry preparation: SNVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing by Leah Palmer and Nicci Palmer Progression and links: You can progress onto the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing course. If you wish to apply for jobs, then you can confidently look to operator roles within the industry, such as stylist within a salon, with further progression to senior stylist, Manager and Salon Owner. Work experience opportunities: Students are encouraged to take up part-time employment in local Hair Salons, and will also have the opportunity to work in the Colleges professional salon.
