Part Time Foundation Degree in Garden Design This course will provide you with expertise in new and established garden design techniques. You will acquire horticultural knowledge, design ability and business skills enabling you to become a professional garden designer. Areas of study Practising garden designers contribute to the course as visiting tutors. Studio-based activities are a significant feature of this course providing individual and group tuition where you will share experiences with staff and fellow students. Course structure This course offers a flexible approach. Modules offer a balance between theoretical and practical subjects from plant knowledge and use, history of garden design and drawing skills, to more general modules which include business management and career development. Career and progression opportunities This course prepares students for a career in garden design and provides a basis for further study at a higher academic level. Module in focus:- History of Garden Design This module is taught by an experienced professional garden designer and expert on garden design history. Emphasis is on the nineteenth century and onwards. This module provides an overview of great people, movements and ideas that have shaped the design of both large-scale parkland and the domestic garden. The influence of industrial age, art deco, arts and craft, and modernism will be explored. This module brings garden design history right up to date by looking at the impact of current environmental and green issues. By the end of the module you will be able to: ? evaluate the impact of nineteenth century industrialisation on urban garden design ? identify the significance of the modernist movement on garden design in the twentieth century ? describe economic, commercial and media influences on contemporary garden design ? demonstrate awareness of environmental, occupational and conservation issues affecting twenty-first century garden design.
