Foundation Degree in Equine Science & Management Subject area: Equine Studies Subject: Equine studies Course type: Part time Course description The equine industry is annually worth in excess of ?900 million in exports alone. According to employers' organisations, there is a shortage of highly qualified professionals with the broad range of management and science skills required to work efficiently and effectively with horses. To meet this need, this foundation degree has been developed, in partnership with OxfordBrookes and local employers, to provide an accessible and flexible course which will enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to their work within the equine industry. Students will attend college for two days per week. For students who are not currently employed in the industry, there will be an opportunity to work on our yard at the Common Leys Farm Campus but students will need to find an additional suitable work placement in order to complete assessment requirements. Students will study the following modules: Year 1 Equine Anatomy and Physiology Practical Horse Husbandry and Management Equine Nutrition Laboratory Science Introduction to Business Learning and Professional Skills Groundwork Skills and Riding Laboratory Science Year 2 Industry based project Animal Behaviour The Internal Business Organisation Advanced Husbandry Management Equine Sports Injury and Therapy Breeding and Stud Management Equine Fittening and Training Equine Health Management Final award Foundation degree ( Science) Equine Science and Management Entry requirements Traditonal entry: 80 UCAS points in a relevant subject, for example National Dipoma or Certificate in Horse Management or appropriate A Levels. Non-Traditional entry: Applications from mature applicants with industry experience are welcome and will be interviewed. All applicants should demonstrate an interest in horses and the equine industry. A background in practical horsemanship would be helpful but not mandatory. Additional information Applications are through UCAS. UCAS code OXFD 66 D426 FdScEQS Fees for 2009-2010 will be ?1285. All tuition fees are payable to Oxford Brookes University at Enrolment. There is an additonal materials and enrichment fee payable to Abingdon and Witney college. This will be in the region of ?150 Student Support is available for this degree.
