Course Description

PART-TIME FOUNDATION DEGREE IN COUNSELLING Who is this course for? This part-time course has been designed to meet an identified need for quality higher level educational provision in the area of counselling. You can take an eighteen month course which leads to a Diploma in Counselling, or a two year course which leads to a Higher Education Certificate in Counselling Studies. Students who successfully undertake supervised counselling practice over three years of study will achieve the Foundation Degree in Counselling. How long is this course for? The course is offered over two evenings each week, or over one day per week. The course is delivered over three years but students can exit at 18 months or two years with the Certificate of Higher Education qualification. What will I study? This course incorporates an integrated model of counselling. In years two and three students completing the Foundation Degree will undertake supervised counselling practice. Modules studied on the course include: Personal Development Person Centred Counselling Cognitive-Behavioural Approaches Skills Development Ethics and Professional Practice Psychodynamic Counselling You must also complete 20 hours of personal therapy Attendance Part Time How will I be assessed? Students will study four modules in each academic year. Each module will have ongoing assessment through a Personal Learning Record. Students will also be assessed through case studies, recorded skills developed sessions and examinations What can I do after the course? This course is relevant for anyone who wants to develop their counselling skills in a relevant work setting. For those who complete the three year Foundation Degree, it acts as a vehicle to becoming professionally accredited as a counsellor. Students who complete the three year course can also be selected to complete a BSc (Hons) in Communication or a BSc (Hons) in Counselling at the University of Ulster. How do I apply?
