Course Description

Part Time Foundation Degree in Animal Science This modular course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for successful employment in animal management, the animal welfare sector and animal sciences or for progression to an undergraduate degree. The topics covered include animal anatomy and physiology, behaviour, ecology, nutrition and health. Optional modules enable a choice to be made between a wide range of subjects, for example biochemistry, microbiology, animals in education, wildlife or conservation management, managing financial resources and business planning and development. Delivered through a combination of lectures, fieldwork, laboratory-based practical sessions, guest speakers and site visits, the course benefits greatly from the presence on campus of the College's Animal Care Unit with its collection of small mammals, aquatics and exotics. In addition the farm carries a wide range of livestock. Single modules from this course can be studied separately, allowing students to work towards the full Foundation Degree in a part-time mode and also support those employed in the industry to develop new skills. Career opportunities include animal welfare, zoological parks, education and animal advisory services. Students may also be able to progress on to the BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences awarded by the University of Brighton. Course Code: ACF1008
