Course Description

Foundation Degree (FdEng) Civil Engineering What you will study Year 1 Analytical Methods This module will provide you with confidence in numeracy and mathematics. Civil Engineering Site Operations 1 This module aims to introduce you to the fundamental aspects of major civil engineering site operations. Hydraulics & Fluid Dynamics The module will provide an understanding of the forces of equilibrium of fluids at rest and in motion. Structural Analysis This module will enable you to be versed in analysing structures including being able to look at simple structures and using statics be able to resolve forces in equilibrium. Research Methods & Study Skills 1 The module aims to develop your capacity to apply a range of academic skills appropriately within a chosen discipline. Learning in Action 1: Applying Skills & Competences This module aims to identify how to apply acquired knowledge, skills, concepts and theories gained. Learning in Action 2: Theory Meets Practice This module aims to develop your capacity to apply knowledge, skills, concepts and theories gained. Year 2 Structural Detailing This module aims to enable you to be versed in analysing structures and then from this analysis be able to specify structural elements of buildings to industry standard. Civil Engineering Site Operations 2. This module aims to introduce you to the fundamental aspects of specialised major civil engineering operations such as highway construction, tunnelling activities, hydraulic and marine structures. Geotechnics This module aims to introduce you to the fundamental aspects of Geology and Geographical materials used in the construction industry. Site Surveying This practical unit is designed to provide you with the ability to use modern surveying equipment and to undertake a range of site surveying procedures typical of today?? s construction industry. Research Methods & Study Skills 2 The module aims to enhance your skills in academic writing and information research, introduce and apply a range of research methodologies and instruments and argue convincingly. Learning in Action 3: Research in Action at Work This module aims to consolidate previously developed knowledge and skills in order to encourage the development of original, critical and independent thinking applicable to a range of workplace practices, appropriate to the discipline. Learning in Action 4: Personal Learning & Development The module aims to enable you to create a comprehensive and relevant personal enhancement plan by identifying a range of academic and specialist developmental needs. Who the course is for How you will study How you will be assessed The methods of assessment aim to develop your intellectual ability and confidence in problem solving and presentation. All modules require the submission and passing of written assignments and exams plus, in some specific modules oral presentations, group work and projects are required. Qualification Title Subject to validation by the University of Wales Course Length The course is two years full-time or three years part-time. Course Availability The course is available at the following campus(es): ? Rhos-on-Sea Entry Guidelines For entry onto the course you will need: - Minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points. Part of this 120 points must be made up of a pass at C Grade or higher in an A2 related discipline such as Maths, Physics, Economics, Geography, Geology or Chemistry - Plus five GCSE passes at Grade C or above (or equivalent) to include Mathematics, English and Science (Double Science or Physics, Chemistry) - Equivalent international qualifications are acceptable - Entry onto Levels 5 will be considered on an individual basis in line with UW?? s admissions policies. Those without such qualifications are considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account.
