Course Description

Providing a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of animal care, students will benefit from a mix of theory combined with a large degree of practical work at our custom built animal management unit. You will learn about the structure and function of the animal body, animal welfare, animal health and nursing. Throughout the course you will be required to complete approximately 10 weekend and holiday days at the unit to further develop your practical skills in addition to work experience in the industry throughout the year. Entry Requirements Evidence of GCSE achievement at Grade D or above, or equivalent qualification attainment at a reasonable level and profile. Students need to have a willingness to learn and some aptitude for coursework. Location Ashford - The North School, Canterbury, Hadlow, Mottingham Course Duration 1 year, 4 days per week Course Content Animal care industry and organisations Animal accommodation, handling and care Introduction to animal and plant biology Animal nursing Care of exotic animals Work related experience in animal care Key skills Assessment Method Continuous assessment through assignments, projects, and practical observations. Students are encouraged to relate theory to practice in all assessments. Progression Routes Successful students can further enhance their skills by enrolling onto a work-based qualification, Apprenticeship or the National Diploma. Alternatively should they wish to do so, they may gain employment within the industry. Specialist Equipment Needed You will need steel toe-capped boots, waterproof clothing and Hadlow College jumper and t-shirt.
