What's the course about? Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for higher education. They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study. In addition to studying the main subjects, you will have the opportunity to study literacy, numeracy and information technology. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical laboratory sessions and private study. The course has been developed with the support of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester. The course is made up of four modules: - Core - Health sciences (biology) - Chemistry - Physicsmaths All units are assessed and graded. Assessment is continuous and ranges from formal written examinations to seminars, practical reports and project work at The Manchester College and possibly Manchester Medical School. What will I be able to do after I've completed this course? In the past, students have progressed onto university courses and careers in dentistry, pharmacy, biological science, health care, medical sciences, biochemistry, optometry, speech pathology and therapy. Many of these courses require you to have experience of either paid or voluntary work in the area of health and social care. For applicants intending to apply for dentistry, many dental schools are also asking applicants to complete and achieve good scores in the UKCAT (United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test), What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course? There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you will need to go through an Initial Assessment process which will help us to place you on the correct course and identify any possible support needs that you might have. Also, you will be expected to show a high level of self-motivation, an interest in dentistry, pharmacy or medical science and a reasonable standard of English and mathematics. Evidence of relevant paid or voluntary work experience would be an advantage. Applicants wishing to progress into Higher Education need to be aware that some Higher Education Institutions may have additional entry requirements (e.g. GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above), in addition to the Access to HE Diploma. Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course? This course enables the learner to obtain an Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to higher education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for higher education.
