Course Description

Part Time Childcare : Early Years Senior Practitioner Foundation Degree (Sector Endorsed) Is this course for you? This course is for current practitioners in the field of early years who already hold a Level 3 qualification, and who have been working with children for at least two years. It is intended to provide professional development, updating of knowledge and the sharing of ideas in contemporary early years practice. Students who enrol are normally in employment as nursery nurses, day care setting managers, child minders, teaching assistants etc. Many are in a management position and intending to use this qualification as a step towards achieving the new Early Years Professional Status (EYPS). This course is validated by Liverpool John Moores University. How long is the course? The course is for 2 years, and leads onto the final year of an Honours Degree, if candidates wish to progress to this. The course is classed as full time, although you will only be attending taught college sessions one day per week. When you will be attending. Wednesdays 1.30 - 8.30 pm. Or Friday 9.15 - 4.15pm Plus, a minimum of 2 days per week in an early years setting. When does the course start? The course starts in mid September, usually the second week. What's the course about? The course is divided into units: Children's Learning Personal, Academic and Professional Development ICT to support learning Working together to support children and families Early Years Curriculum Inclusiveness Child protection Research Managing the Professional Role. In addition you will be able to choose one unit from the following: Working as a Teaching assistance Working in the Foundation Stage Playwork. These option units are delivered on line. All units are underpinned by an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice. In addition to the taught units there are weekly tutorials to support the students in their academic study. Is work experience a necessary part of the course? All course work is embedded in the workplace. Students need to have a minimum of two years experience prior to starting the course, and undertake a minimum of two days in the workplace each week during the length of the course. Each student will have a workplace mentor whose role is to supervise practice, be a professional friend and to help the student apply theory to practice. How will you be assessed? Each module has either one or two assignments attached to it. The assignments range from essays, group projects, and presentations to case studies, reports and timed essays. All students complete a professional development portfolio, containing a learning journal which shows personal reflections from college sessions, background reading and workplace practice. Students have tutorial support whilst in College and are visited in the workplace by a College tutor. All students need an appointed mentor within the work place whose role is that of professional friend, to help apply theory to practice in a meaningful way. What qualification will you achieve? Foundation Degree Early Years Senior Practitioner (Sector Endorsed) validated by Liverpool John Moores University. There may also be the opportunity to be assessed against the Higher Level Teaching Assistant Standards (HLTA) for those students working as a TA and supported by their workplace to do this. Standards for the HLTA and EYPS are mapped into the content of the coursework, and students are encouraged to use relevant evidence from the course if applying for these statuses. What can this course lead to? On successful completion of the course students may apply to study at Honours Degree Level. There are two specific options designed for students who would like to progress to Honours Degree Level: BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies at Stockport College, or BA (Hons) Childhood and Adolescence Studies at Liverpool John Moores University.
