How to Apply/Enrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline This work-related course will provide you with a solid foundation in key aspects of one of the following subjects: Applied Chemistry; Applied Biology; Medical Science; Forensic Science. It contains A Level topics. Each Award contains six full units. Profile National Award in Applied Chemistry typical composition: Fundamentals of Science Scientific Practical Techniques Practical Chemical Analysis Industrial Applications of Chemical Reactions Chemical Periodicity and Its Applications Industrial Applications of Organic Chemistry National Award in Applied Biology or Medical Science typical composition: Fundamentals of Science Scientific Practical Techniques Biochemical Techniques Physiology of Human Body Systems Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction Genetics and Genetic Engineering National Award in Forensic Science typical composition: Fundamentals of Science Scientific Practical Techniques Application of Numbers for Science Technicians (half unit) Statistics for Science Technicians (half unit) Criminal Psychology Chemical Laboratory Techniques Criminal Investigation Practice Additional Information The course seeks to help you with transferable learning skills, knowledge and personal competencies. All students will have a Personal Tutor/Tutor Adviser who will offer guidance and counselling as necessary. To ensure all learners are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the programme will be an extended induction period. During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. Your behaviour will also be monitored, including your time management and attendance. Towards the end of the induction period, your course tutor will review your progress. If your course tutor believes the programme does not meet your requirements an appointment will be arranged with you (and possibly your parents) to discuss this assessment and a suitable alternative. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance Team based in the college. Opportunities BTEC National qualifications are valued by employers and so successful completion of the course can offer: 1. Entry into laboratory, technical, scientific or other employment. 2. Entry into Wirral Metropolitan College's National Certificate or Diploma in Applied Science. 3. For certain mature learners, entry to the BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Chemistry or Applied Biology (Part time). 4. Depending on maturity and background, the National Award in Applied Chemistry or Applied Biology will allow entry to the Foundation Degree in Forensic Science (part time or full time).
