Course Description

This comprehensive degree programme covers all aspects of Equine Management and equips graduates with the necessary skills to run their own equine business. Structured to allow you to pursue a programme which reflects your experiences and interests, the course is a mix between theory and practical outside demonstrations, visits and seminars. You will cover the training and breeding of horses, equine science and estate management. UCAS Course Code: D422 H BScEqMgt Entry Requirements 160 UCAS points: 2 A levels at Grade C or above or a National Diploma at PMM or equivalent in appropriate subjects. Additional Experience Life experiences are taken into account when considering applications. Location Hadlow Course Duration 3 years, 2-3 days per week, plus work experience in years 1 and 2. Course Content Year 1 Horse mastership and equitation 1 and 2 Stud practice Grassland soils management Training young horses Equine science Land use practices (business management) Estate maintenance Year 2 Marketing and event management Equine resource planning (business management) Equine and human sports science Estate management (business management) Introduction to research skills A choice of: Coaching techniques Stresses in the sports horse Horse breeding management Advanced equitation Year 3 Industrial perspectives Advanced animal behaviour Advanced animal nutrition Applied alternative therapies Thesis A choice of: Breeding enterprise management Advances in equine reproductive techniques Current issues Students are expected to undertake work experience in each year. You will be supported in finding an appropriate placement which will enable you to gain an insight into working life. Assessment Method Coursework (written assignments, reports, case studies and presentations) as well as end of unit examinations. Progression Routes Successful students may progress onto a related MSc or PhD programme. Alternatively, the programme provides students with the necessary skills for management within a commercial or competition yard environment, or related industry. Specialist Equipment Needed BSI approved riding hat, boots, jodhpurs, whip, hoof-pick and grooming kit.
