Course Description

Taught by experienced veterinary nurses, this course covers a wide range of subjects and is a step on the way to becoming a qualified veterinary nurse. Making full use of our practical rooms and animal collection, you will be given excellent opportunities to practice your animal handling and husbandry skills. With its combination of theory and practise, the course covers a range of subjects relating to the anatomy and physiology of animals as well as basic nursing care. Entry Requirements Students must be 16 years old or over and: Possess appropriate work experience in a veterinary practice (this does not have to be paid employment). We recommend that all students carry a minimum of 2 days per week working in a veterinary practice and 1 day per week attending college. Have a keen interest in animals. Formal qualifications are not essential. Location Hadlow Course Duration 1 year, 1 day per week in college. Course Content Anatomy and physiology of small mammals (cats and dogs) and exotics Basic veterinary nursing skills Veterinary animal management Animal care and pet ownership Animal health and hygiene Veterinary reception and administration Veterinary sales and finance skills Assessment Method Students complete a practical portfolio involving work based assessments under the guidance of a qualified colleague. At the end of the course students sit an external examination marked by the ABCBVNA. Progression Routes Successful students are able to assist veterinary nurses and surgeons within their practice. You may also be able to progress onto a Veterinary Nursing course.
