Access to Higher Education - Social Work Attendance Part-time Evening Duration 1 Year Level This is a Level 3 course Times Starting 10 Sep 2009: Conway Park: Thu 16:00-21:10 Starting around 6 Sep 2010: Not yet timetabled It is planned to offer this course in the academic year 201011. How to ApplyEnrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline This course is a preparation for entry to a Degree or Diploma in Social Work and is an alternative to traditional A-level entry requirements. Profile This course is designed for those wishing to pursue a career in the social work or a related profession. You will be required to undertake study at an independent level using work experience and tutorial support to accrue credits for various modules. These modules will be taught in 2 hourly sessions with additional study skills units. You will study three subjects, which are Social Work, Sociology and Psychology. The Social Work component includes units in anti-discriminatory practice and children in need. Sociology will include units in care in the community and multi-agency working. Within Psychology you will cover topics including concepts of abnormality and developmental psychology. In addition, there is a compulsory Core Skills module, which includes Essay writing, Career Planning, Information Technology and Application of Number. Credits are awarded for the Access course modules. 60 credits are available: 15 for each of three subjects and 15 for Core Skills. To achieve the Access Certificate, you must gain 60 credits, with a minimum of 45 credits at Level Three. Tutorial support and guidance will be offered to overlook and support academic study and development. It is envisaged that relevant work based practice will be used to enhance course theory. Additional Information In addition to attending one evening a week you will have to attend 6 study days spread throughout the year. The course is currently only available at Conway Park. Later courses may be charged at a different rate. Fees quoted are on an individual student basis only. Opportunities Degree in Social Work, career enhancement. Entry Requirement You should be able to provide evidence of academic achievement at level 2, which is equivalent to GCSEs. Suitable evidence would be proof of successful completion of a Pre-Access course. By successful completion you would need to have achieved a pass of at least 65% for any subject relevant to the Access Social Work Pathway. Alternatively, a GCSE course of at least three subjects, or suitable qualifications and skills achieved through your employment. In addition, there should be evidence of study within the past five years. GCSE English is a compulsory entry requirement. GCSE Maths is also required although students without this qualification can achieve a level 2 National Test by attending a course at Wirral Metropolitan College (this is separate to the Access programme). Applicants must also be presently working (voluntary or paid part-time or full-time) in the area of Health or Social Care.
