A2 PSYCHOLOGY Is this course right for me? A2 Psychology builds upon the foundations of psychological knowledge studied at AS level and gives you an opportunity to study some uses of psychology in the real world. The course is the final part towards the full A Level qualification. What will I be learning? The course follows the edexcel specifications and is assessed in two modules: Unit 3 (90 minute examination) consists of short-answer questions and a section of extended writing on the following topics: Criminological Psychology: psychological explanations for criminal behaviour, problems with eyewitness testimony and treating offenders. Child Psychology: the development of relationships in infancy, as well as the impact of day care on young children. Unit 4 (120 minutes examination) consists of short-answer questions and a section of extended writing on the following topics: Clinical Psychology: explanations for mental illness, their diagnosis and treatment. You will study two disorders, including schizophrenia. Issue and Debates: the contributions psychology has made to society, what methods it uses and whether the research conducted is ethical. You will also address problems associated with psychological knowledge being used to control people???s behaviour, the influences of inheritance and upbringing and the question of whether psychology is really a science. How will I learn? During the 4.5 hours of lessons per week a wide range of strategies are used to engage students and to aid the understanding of challenging concepts. These strategies include traditional lecturing and note-taking student research and presentation group work discussions and debates quizzes role play, and peer learning. In addition there will be a formal timed assessment each week. Tutors offer individual support and there is access to resources and activities via our Virtual Learning Environment: Moodle. Furthermore, it is a requirement that the recommended textbook be purchased to assist with learning. What else might I want to know? Examination entry for Unit 4 is only available in June Unit 3 is available in January or June. What can I do afterwards? Successful completion of the A2 qualification can lead to undertaking a BSC or BA Psychology degree programme at university. Psychology may also provide a valuable combination with Higher Education courses in the Humanities (e.g. English) or Sciences (e.g. Biology). Alternatively, employment in any person-centred profession (e.g. nursing, journalism, marketing) will be assisted by the knowledge, transferable skills and experience of studying A2 Psychology.
