NVQ 2 Laboratory Technician Working in Education (LATA) Attendance Flexible Duration 1 Year Level This is a Level 2 course Times Starting around 1 Aug 2010: Not yet timetabled It is planned to offer this course in the academic year 2010/11. How to Apply/Enrol Application Form to be returned to Learner Services Course Outline The NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (LATA) is a competence-based qualification assessed in the workplace. You show that you can do your job. It is possible to start this course at any time in the academic year. Profile The units reflect the range of skills needed to deliver high quality technical support in a school, college or university science laboratory. There are three mandatory and three optional units, two of which must come from Group A. Mandatory Units 1.01 Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements 1.02 Developing and maintaining working relationships 1.03 Use laboratory information systems Group A 2.08 Prepare laboratories for learning activities 2.09 Maintain laboratory and associated resources 2.10 Process requests to support learning Group B 2.11 Contribute to the support of student activities 2.12 Trial laboratory methods for use in learning activities 2.06 Calibrate equipment 2.07 Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment The details of these units are given in a set of national standards. You will get a copy of these and the paperwork you need (CD or paper). You will be assessed once you have gained confidence and competence in performing the tasks associated with your normal job-role. When being assessed, you will be expected to produce evidence to show your competence. The evidence will be used to produce a portfolio. While showing your assessor that you have the skills associated with each unit, you also have to show that you understand what you are doing. Your will answer written questions to your understanding. Learners who find writing difficult, may answer questions orally, on tape. Additional Information Attendance: Flexible, 1 year, commencing in September, January or April. It is possible to complete the NVQ whilst studying for an additional qualification at college, for example, the Level 2 Certificate in Laboratory Technical Skills, BTEC First Diploma or National Award/Certificate/Diploma in Applied Science. Funding LSC Remission Available Qualifications Offered (in next Class) NVQ2 LATA (This is a full Level-2 qualification) Funding Stream: 45 - Employer Responsive Fees: Tuition: ?425.00, Registration: ?110.00, Materials: ?15.00 Please Note: These are current course fees. Later courses may be charged at a different rate. Fees quoted are on an individual student basis only. Opportunities This qualification is aimed at candidates who are in employment in a science laboratory. Candidates with appropriate job roles may progress to the other LATA NVQs (Levels 3&4). Other possible qualifications are the Certificates in Laboratory Technical Skills Levels 2&3 and BTEC qualifications, levels 2 - 4. Entry Requirement There are no formal requirements for level 2. You must be performing a level 2 job. Communication skills - You will need the ability to communicate on a one to one basis and in a group as part of a discussion. Literacy - Much of the course material is written down and you will need to be able to read and understand it. Written assignments are used in the assessment process. You will need to record data - dates, weights, results etc. Numeracy - Basic numeracy skills are needed in order to record and sort data and to do simple calculations. Information Technology - Basic computer skills are needed e.g. the ability to input data. There is help available for any aspect of the above skills. Manual dexterity - You will need the ability to carry out practical work which requires manual dexterity. If English is not your first language, you may need an English
