Course Description

AIMS This programme, accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT), is designed for both practising professionals and new graduates to develop and apply advanced skills and understanding to the planning, management and operation of transport systems. It aims to help you establish a responsible attitude towards the needs of society and the environment and to pay particular regard to transport safety considerations. The modules taken from Newcastle University Business School enable you to gain a greater understanding of a wide range of management issues. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION For the MSc, 10 taught modules (100 credits) are chosen comprising seven transport modules from the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and three management-related modules from the Business School. You may also be permitted to choose modules from other relevant subject areas. You must also undertake a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits). For the Diploma, eight taught modules (80 credits) are chosen following a similar structure to those for the MSc. You also write a 40-credit dissertation. Transport modules may include: transport policy in practice the economic and environmental appraisal of transport activities intelligent transport systems and e-services and quantitative methods. Optional modules include a wide range from the Business School and a further module from: project management railway management, economics and planning traffic management techniques travel demand forecasting road safety public enquiry into a transport scheme characteristics of public transport systems. Diploma students select their modules from those listed or from those offered by the Business School.
