Course Description

AIMS The programme aims to launch competent experienced marine consultants and coastal managers into UK and European businesses to meet the growing demand for multidisciplinary graduates within a rapidly expanding environmental sector. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION IMEC combines marine environmental science with management, consultancy and enterprise skills. The modules, case-studies, workshops and projects are supported by industry, government and non-governmental organisations, as well as other academic institutions and include: Royal-Haskoning Halcrow Atkins (Coastal Environment) ERM Environment Agency and Wood Holmes. Compulsory taught modules (80 credits) typically include: critical appraisal of coastal systems marine environmental research skills project management application business entrepreneurship coastal governance and environmental impact assessment. Optional modules (30 credits) typically include: habitat mapping and resource assessment using remote sensing sustainable world aquaculture principles and practice of integrated coastal management coastal flood risk and renewable energy - policy, politics and ethics. Modules include a diverse range of teaching methods including lectures, practical classes, workshops and in-depth case studies of real consultancy projects in the marine environment. The MSc culminates in a four-month internship period, where you will be supported and supervised by experienced academic researchers and active marine sector consultants in either a UKEU or international consultancy, whilst undertaking your marine project for assessment (70 credits). You will have the opportunity to select a partner with whom to develop your consultancy project, working in Newcastle or within a partner?s business off-campus. Extra costs may be incurred during the consultancy project phase as part of this programme however, some financial support may be available.
