Course Description

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION The new MSc course in Biotechnology will give students the opportunity to enhance research and development skills using biological principles and systems to create new products, services and industries. It will investigate the economic basis for current biotechnology structures and areas of future demand for biotechnology in the second decade of the 21st Century, including the global pharmaceutical industry and innovation in drug and vaccine design and regenerative medicine. Changing human demography and growing demand for food, fuel, intelligent agriculture and a cleaner, greener environment will also be major thematic areas of the course. The programme lasts 12 months and involves two semesters of taught courses ending with examinations at the end of term (December) and during the first week of the summer term (April). Students take a total of 60 credits in the Semester One and 60 credits in Semester Two. Provided that students have fulfilled the necessary academic requirements they spend the summer carrying out a research project or an industrial placement which is allocated an additional 60 credits. FUNDING A number of SAAS awards (Student Awards Agency for Scotland) will be available for selected HomeEU students. These will be awarded on a competitive basis.
