Course Description

The MSc Urban Regeneration and Management provides a unique opportunity for professionals who are working in agencies in urban regeneration and for those who would like to pursue a career in urban regeneration. The course combines two disciplines i.e. urban regeneration and business management, with the aim to equip students with the necessary skills for successful regeneration. Course Aims The course aims to combine business skills in strategic planning, financial control, organisational management and project implementation with knowledge in policy and practice in urban regeneration. More specifically, the course objectives are to develop: An understanding and awareness of key business disciplines An awareness of the role of business and management in urban regeneration An understanding of the national and regional policy contexts surrounding urban regeneration The necessary skills to achieve prescribed tasks in urban regeneration Course Structure The course has a modular structure. It comprises three distinct components i.e. urban regeneration, management and research. Students are required to study four taught modules from each of the components of urban regeneration and management, and to submit a dissertation, (equivalent to four modules). The length of the dissertation is 12-15,000 words. Modules typically include: Strategic Organisation Managing Human Resources Managing Finance Urban and Regional Regeneration Urban Regeneration Project Understanding Social Exclusion Communites, Regeneration and Evaluation Planning and Property Development The Cultural Economy of Cities Trends Outcomes and Impacts Urban Design and Regeneration Geographical Information Systems Globalisation and the City Dissertation Teaching, Learning and Assessment The course adopts a combination of teaching and assessment methods. Teaching combines classroom methods, such as lectures and seminars, with practical sessions, such as project work and visits to regeneration agencies. Students are assessed by a combination of coursework, such as essays, reports, seminar presentations, and examinations. Some modules are assessed entirely by coursework.
