Course Description

The course is designed for graduates who: * Wish to progress to either a career in advertising, marketing communications or related industries, * Are already qualified to work in the adverting industry, but wish to enhance their research skills before entering the job market. * Want to conduct high level research into the psychology of advertising and marketing communications. The course provides an opportunity to conduct a dissertation project as a placement in a non-academic organisation, whoch might be a major advertising agency, an online provider, a design studio, or a major retailer. During the course, students will experience both academic and practitioner contributions, and will acquire a firm understanding of issues such as: * What makes a successful advertising campaign and what causes a campaign to fail, * What cognitive, social, developmental and neuropsychological factors combine to influence the nature and interpretation of advertising communications, * What practical determinants are relevant to putting together a successful advertising strategy within the constraints of a commercial environment, * What impact do new technologies and media have on the nature and development of advertising materials and campaigns. All students complete the following five taught modules: * Analysing and Interpreting Data * Psychological Aspects of Advertising * Advanced Advertising Theory * Practical Advertising Research and Planning * Analysing Talk and Text Project: All students carry out an original research project written up as a dissertation.
