Course Description

The course aims to provide advanced training in the rapidly expanding field of medical engineering. Particular emphasis is placed on the multidisciplinary nature of medical engineering and the current shift towards the interface between engineering and the life sciences. The course offers students a wide range of options, and therefore, the opportunity to tailor the course to their individual needs. It is aimed at a range of personnel involved in medical engineering including engineers, surgeons, sales and marketing staff and regulatory personnel, who wish to pursue a career in this sector or are already in employment. The course provides students with a broad coverage of this rapidly expanding field whilst at the same time allowing a degree of specialisation through the provision of optional material. Particular emphasis is placed on inter-professional training and the multidisciplinary nature of the discipline, enabling the student to successfully complete complex tasks at the increasingly important interface between engineering and the life sciences. Sample modules include: Basic Orthopaedic Engineering, Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering Simulation, Biotribology, Computational and Experimental Methods, Functional Joint Replacement Technology, Functional Joint Replacement Technology, Introductory Medical Device Engineering, Research Methods, Spinal Biomechanics and Instrumentation, Tissue Engineering.
