Course Description

Aims of the course This course is designed to develop advanced mathematics graduates by offering them specialisation within a range of job-related areas. The course focuses particularly on mathematical and statistical methods, operational research and the application of advanced modelling techniques and quantitative theory to practice, particularly in support of business, finance and industry. The course recognises and embraces the importance of mathematical and quantitative analysis within modern business, and gives graduates a strong platform from which to secure specialist and rewarding careers. Our strong research reputation, and our links with industry, ensure that this course is fascinating, relevant and tailored to the mathematics needed in complex organisations. Course structure The course consists of five core modules, one optional module and a dissertation of around 15,000 words. Core modules: Applied Statistical Modelling and Stochastic Processes Matrices, Series and Metric Spaces Solution Techniques for Partial Differential Equations Optimisation Methods and Simulation Research and Development Optional modules include: Applied Data Mining Techniques Information Security Quantitative Analysis for Finance Assessment You are assessed via a combination of coursework, individual and group research projects, end of semester examinations and a final dissertation. Career opportunities The course will give students a competitive edge in securing employment in popular sectors such as business finance IT and computing and academia. The Civil Service, the NHS and many other public sector employers are also possible destinations for graduates.
