Course Description

Aims The qualification provides a detailed academic study of Lift Engineering and related management issues. For current practitioners in the industry, it offers an opportunity to continue professional development at postgraduate level and obtain a high quality engineering education oriented towards lift engineering. One of the key features of the qualification is that it is taught via distance learning, meaning engineers do not need to be released from their day-to-day duties to attend study sessions. Features The qualification is tailored to the needs of those who are employed in the lift manufacturing and allied industries and is supported by the Lift and Escalator Industry Association. The flexible structure of the course and distance learning study minimizes time away from work and benefits both the employer and the employee. A research project forms an integral part of the course and gives students an opportunity to conduct an independent study making use of the skills and knowledge acquired on the course. Structure The MSc consists of seven modules five compulsory modules, including the dissertation, together with two designated modules which tailor the programme to the student?s particular interests and career aspirations. The dissertation module consists of an in depth design or investigative research project in an appropriate topic related to the course material and objectives, proposed by the student and negotiated with the course team. They will gain an in-depth understanding of advanced technical issues arising in lift design, maintenance and contract management. The broad range of skills, experiences and expertise achieved will mean graduates are better placed to progress in their professional career. The MSc qualification provides an opportunity for the graduates to continue their studies towards higher research degrees The University has an active research programme in the field of lift technology and well-equipped laboratory facilities for those wishing to pursue a research degree (MPhilPhD).
