Course Description

Qualification Aims The British School of Leather Technology at The University of Northampton is a world-leader in the field of leather education and research. The only MSc in Leather Technology available in the UK the qualification will provide students with an opportunity to enhance their technical skills relating to both self learning and research, enabling them to make critical appraisals of the technical needs of the leather and associated industries. The qualification develops the skills and flexibility necessary to discriminate between technical and commercialentrepreneurial issues relating to the successful management of commercial operations within the leather industry. The University has very strong relationships with the leather industry, both in the UK and internationally, and the University?s Leather and Biomaterials research group has been involved in major EU supported projects which have involved many industrial partners in the UK and mainland Europe. Qualification Content The qualification is modular and can be completed in a year of full time study or over a longer period on a part-time basis. The course is structured into three semesters with practical and theoretical teaching occurring in the first two semesters. During the third semester, a research project is undertaken, where students are able to apply the knowledge gained during the academic year with the support of the academic staff. The University fosters an environment that promotes critical appraisal, stimulates creativity and encourages students to undertake research around advanced technologies. The projects available are diverse and interdisciplinary, allowing students to undertake research that fits their interest and career aspirations. All current students and Alumni belong to the University?s Corium Club, an international community of professionals through which students can build an international network of leather industry contacts and relationships. Career Opportunities Most of our postgraduates have no difficulty in finding a suitable post in the leather production or associated industries ? demand for postgraduates often exceeds supply and opportunities are available worldwide. Students have a wide variety of excellent career opportunities available to them after graduating including careers in the fashions industry, technical management, research and development, higher education and government bodies. Further Study Opportunity for further study is also available in the form of an MPhil or PhD. The University has achieved excellent results in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise confirming that the research carried out is of international excellence.
